The Merkava (Chariot) Mk 1 tank is the first of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) designed and produced Main Battle Tank (MBT). The Mk. 1 is the first generation in this great series fitted with a front mounted engine and transmission. The Merkava Mk. 1 is also equipped with the 105 mm main gun, the same that was installed in the later Merkava Siman 2, as well as in the Magach and Shot-Cal fleets. The Merkava Mk. 1 also had three 7.62 mm MAG machine guns, a .50 Cal heavy machine gun mounted on the gun mantlet, a 60 mm mortar and 2 smoke grenade launchers with 6 rounds each (in the hybrid version).
