The IAR.80 is a product of the domestic Romanian aviation industry, actively used by the Forțele Aeriene Regale ale României during Operation Barbarossa in 1941, when Romania cooperated with the Third Reich in the attack on the USSR. The IAR.80A version was distinctly modernized – it received more powerful armament (including an increased number of machine guns) and a better-armored cockpit, which translated into higher survivability in air battles on the Eastern Front. These aircraft played a key role in the defense against Soviet aviation, particularly on the Eastern Front until 1944.
