Kugisho D4Y Suisei (Jap. 彗星 – Comet, NATO code: "Judy") is a fast Japanese carrier-based dive bomber, initially designed by Aichi, but also manufactured by Kugisho (Yokosuka). The prototype's maiden flight took place in 1940, and D4Y aircraft entered service in 1942. They were primarily used by the Imperial Japanese Navy during the most important battles of the final phase of the Pacific War—including the Battle of the Philippine Sea and Leyte. They were famous for their excellent speed and superb aerodynamic properties, highly valued by pilots, but due to their lightweight construction, they were vulnerable to destruction in combat.
