The Fw 189C/V-6 was an attempt to adapt the reconnaissance Fw 189 for the role of a heavily armed attack aircraft. After experiences in the Spanish Civil War, German designers decided to develop a machine capable of direct ground support and breaking through fortifications. Several prototypes were built as part of the program, the third of which, the Fw 189V-6 (Fw 189C), stood out with its armored two-seater cockpit and powerful armament – two 20 mm MG-FF cannons and four MG17 (7.92 mm) machine guns, plus a defensive MG81. Despite very good test results at Rechlin in 1940, it was ultimately not put into serial production – the Luftwaffe chose the Hs 129A as the primary attack aircraft.
