Mitsubishi A6M Zero was the main carrier-based fighter of the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II (1939-1945). It was famous for its unrivaled maneuverability and very long range, which made it extremely effective in the early years of the conflict, especially during the Battle of Midway and operations over the Solomon Islands, from bases in the legendary Rabaul. The A6M2b Type 21 was the original version used in the attack on Pearl Harbor (December 7, 1941) and in offensive actions during the early phase of the war. The improved A6M3 Type 22 was introduced in 1942, offering better speed and performance at medium altitudes, aimed at increasing Japanese chances in increasingly difficult air battles with the Allies.
