Historical Background

The Bristol Beaufort Mk.I was a key torpedo bomber and patrol aircraft of RAF Coastal Command during World War II. Besides the UK, it was widely used by the air units of the Dominions. New Zealanders of the RNZAF flew Beaufort Mk.Is in No. 489 Squadron from 1941 until the winter of 1942. In the same period, 18 aircraft supplemented the South African Air Force, which protected shipping around the Cape of Good Hope and participated in combating Vichy French forces during operations in Madagascar. The Canadians operated these aircraft in No. 415 and No. 149 Squadrons until mid-1943, carrying out patrol and anti-submarine duties. Period of use: World War II, years 1941–1943.
