The Messerschmitt Bf-109 E-3 is a German single-engine fighter which was a breakthrough in aircraft design. It was the main weapon of the Condor Legion during the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) and became a symbol of modern aviation of that era. The aircraft introduced many innovations – an enclosed cockpit, retractable landing gear, and a powerful engine – providing a decisive advantage over adversaries. The Bf-109 E-3 also played a key role in the early campaigns of World War II.
