Historical overview:
HMS Calcutta was launched in 1918 at the Vickers shipyard, but it played its most significant role during World War II. After conversion to an anti-aircraft cruiser in 1939, it mainly operated in the Mediterranean Sea. She participated, among others, in the dramatic evacuation of refugees from Bordeaux in June 1940. During this mission, HMS Calcutta collided with the destroyer Fraser. Her service ended when she was sunk by German Ju-88 bombers on June 1, 1941, north of Alexandria during the Battle of Crete.
