This model depicts the authentic Japanese submarine I-156, which played an important role in the Pacific Theater. The vessel was constructed as part of the modernization of the Imperial Japanese Navy, resulting from the restrictions of the Washington Naval Treaty of 1922. Launched in 1926, it entered service three years later. It took part in offensive missions during World War II: in December 1941, it participated in the Murray Operation and in actions aimed at destroying Allied commerce. In March 1942, the submarine was involved in the famous Battle of Midway. Later converted into a training unit, from 1943 it also served as a supply transporter, and in 1945 it was rebuilt to carry Kaiten-type suicide weapons. The service of the vessel ended in 1946, when it was sunk by American forces.

The set contains carefully made plastic parts that allow for a faithful reproduction of the silhouette of this historical vessel. The model features characteristic details of the deck, conning tower, and equipment typical for Japanese ships of that era. It is an excellent choice for naval history enthusiasts and collectors of 1/700 scale models. We especially recommend this model to those interested in World War II history and ship modeling. Aoshima 05826 offers a satisfying modeling experience and enriches any collection with a unique element.

What does the scale of the model mean?

A model scale designation such as 1:30 means the model is 30 times smaller than the original. Scale indicates proportion, not resolution or detail.

  • Models with a smaller number after the colon (e.g. 1:48, 1:32) are larger and have more detail.
  • Scales with higher numbers (e.g. 1:164, 1:200, 1:350) are smaller - good for collections, dioramas, or displaying many models together.
