In March 1942, the submarine was involved in the famous Battle of Midway. Later converted into a training unit, from 1943 it also served as a supply transporter, and in 1945 it was rebuilt to carry Kaiten-type suicide weapons. The service of the vessel ended in 1946, when it was sunk by American forces.
