Il-2 Shturmovik – history and use

The Ilyushin Il-2 Shturmovik was developed in the USSR and entered service in 1941, becoming one of the most important Soviet aircraft of World War II. The two-seat 1943 version, recreated by the Zvezda 4826 model, was introduced after it turned out that a single pilot was insufficient during intense combat— a rear gunner was added, increasing protection against attacks from German fighters. The Il-2 played a key role in battles on the Eastern Front, especially during the sieges of Stalingrad and Kursk. Commonly used by the Soviet Air Force between 1941–1945, it symbolized the strength of Soviet assault aviation.
