Substantive and Historical Description

The pocket battleship Admiral Graf Spee was the last unit of the Deutschland class, designed as a compromise between the characteristics of a battleship and speed and mobility. Launched on June 30, 1934, and commissioned on January 6, 1936, it gained recognition for both its advanced construction and visual silhouette.
The ship served in the navy of Nazi Germany (Kriegsmarine). It gained a reputation during the patrol of the Spanish coast in the civil war and during World War II, where it conducted successful raiding missions against Allied ships in the Atlantic.
The culminating moment in the career of the ship was the Battle of the River Plate (December 13, 1939), where it faced British and New Zealand cruisers; after which the commander, Hans Langsdorff, evacuated the crew and destroyed the ship near Montevideo. The remains of the vessel are still explored today because of the breakthrough technologies used by the Germans.
