History of the Mitsubishi A7M1 Reppu aircraft: The Japanese fighter A7M "Reppu" (Allied code name: "Sam") was intended to be the successor to the legendary A6M Zero, responding to the new and demanding circumstances of the war in the Pacific. Development began in 1940 after analyzing data from the ongoing aerial war in Europe. Designer Jiro Horikoshi, creator of the Zero, undertook the challenge of producing an aircraft with much improved performance, maneuverability, firepower, and durability. The prototype A7M1, first flown on May 6, 1944, was used for intensive internal and Navy trials. Despite an advanced design (combat flaps, armored cockpit, self-sealing fuel tanks), the aircraft never reached mass production due to insufficient engine power and the approaching end of the war.
