The battleships Scharnhorst and Gneisenau were modern units of the Kriegsmarine introduced into service in 1938–1939. Both ships were used by Germany during World War II. Scharnhorst gained notoriety for sinking many Allied convoys until it was sunk in 1943 during the Battle of North Cape. Gneisenau was heavily damaged in 1942 and never returned to service.
