Japanese destroyer Shimakaze – historical information

The Shimakaze destroyer was one of the most innovative ships of the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II (years of service: 1943–1944). The ship was designed as a prototype of a very fast destroyer, capable of reaching speeds up to 40 knots. Shimakaze was unique due to its powerful torpedo armament – nine Long Lance torpedo launchers – making it the best-armed destroyer of its type in its era. Ultimately, only one unit was built, which actively participated in battles in the Pacific, including the Battle of Leyte in 1944, where it was sunk.
