Historical Overview of USS Astoria (CA-34)
The USS Astoria cruiser was built at the Puget Sound Navy Yard (Washington, USA). Construction began on September 1, 1930, she was launched on December 16, 1933, and joined the US Navy fleet on April 28, 1934. This ship was actively used by the United States during World War II. She served, among others, during the Pacific campaign, including the famous Battle of Savo Island, where she was unfortunately sunk in August 1942. The USS Astoria gained recognition both for her crew and technical qualities, being an important element of the US surface fleet during the war.
