Historical Description

The Mitsubishi A5M “Claude” was the world’s first carrier-borne fighter with retractable landing gear, manufactured by Mitsubishi Jukogyo Kabushiki Kaisha. It served from the mid-1930s through the beginning of World War II as the main fighter for Japanese aircraft carriers. The aircraft saw action in the Sino-Japanese wars and in the early stages of the Pacific campaign. The A5M2b (Late) version featured an improved canopy and enhanced construction details. It was primarily operated from 1937-1942, debuting in operations over China and later taking part in the Battle of the Coral Sea and several other World War II engagements before being replaced by the A6M Zero.

Why Choose This Model?

  • Authentically reflects Japanese naval aviation of World War II
  • Rich surface details, rivet lines, cockpit details true to the original
  • Perfect for dioramas with aircraft carriers or naval airfields
  • Excellent foundation for advanced painting and weathering techniques
  • Exceptional build quality characteristic of Fine Molds

We recommend this model for intermediate modellers as well as all enthusiasts of World War II aviation. Building it requires precision and attention, so we rate the difficulty level at 3/5. It is an excellent collector’s item—both for individual collections and as part of themed modelling dioramas.

Scale
1/48

What does the scale of the model mean?

A model scale designation such as 1:30 means the model is 30 times smaller than the original. Scale indicates proportion, not resolution or detail.

  • Models with a smaller number after the colon (e.g. 1:48, 1:32) are larger and have more detail.
  • Scales with higher numbers (e.g. 1:164, 1:200, 1:350) are smaller - good for collections, dioramas, or displaying many models together.
