After the occupation of Czechoslovakia by Germany in 1939, several hundred of these tanks found their way into German weapon stocks. During Operation Barbarossa and the early fighting on the Eastern Front in 1941, it became clear that these vehicles were not suited to the new battlefield environment. Therefore, in 1941\/1942, a decision was made to modernize them. The turret was removed, and the hull was reinforced with an additional armor plate.
