The Mörser Zugmittel 35(t), also known as the Artillerie Schlepper 35(t), was developed at the initiative of the German army after the rapid wear of Czechoslovakian Pz.Kpfw. 35 (t) tanks in the early years of the war. After the occupation of Czechoslovakia by Germany in 1939, several hundred of these tanks found their way into German weapon stocks. During Operation Barbarossa and the early fighting on the Eastern Front in 1941, it became clear that these vehicles were not suited to the new battlefield environment. Therefore, in 1941/1942, a decision was made to modernize them. The turret was removed, and the hull was reinforced with an additional armor plate. About 25 units of the Mörser Zugmittel 35(t) were built, serving as specialized artillery tractors and ammunition transport vehicles for heavy mortars and howitzers until the end of the war.
