Aoshima 02288 Ki-61-I Hien Tei is a high-quality 1/72 scale plastic model kit that faithfully reproduces the legendary Japanese fighter aircraft used during World War II. The model is manufactured by the renowned Aoshima company, known for its attention to detail and historical accuracy in its replicas. The product does not include glue or paints – for the best results, we recommend using dedicated modeling accessories.

Recreation of the Historical Ki-61-I Hien “Tony” Aircraft

The Ki-61-I Hien fighter (Japanese: 飛燕, Hien – “Swallow”) was designed by Kawasaki and entered service in the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force (IJAAF) in 1943. Its most significant operational period was World War II. This aircraft participated in combat across multiple theaters of war, including the battles for the Solomon Islands, New Guinea, and the defense of Japan’s home islands.

The Ki-61 was unusual for Japanese military aviation of its era – it was equipped with a liquid-cooled inline Ha-40 engine (the German DB 601A produced under license). Thanks to this, its silhouette differed significantly from typical radial engine designs. The Tei version was armed with 20 mm cannons and featured reinforced armor, increasing its combat effectiveness.

  • Scales with higher numbers (e.g. 1:164, 1:200, 1:350) are smaller - good for collections, dioramas, or displaying many models together.
