The AV-8 Harrier aircraft, including the AV-8A, AV-8B variants and their modifications, were used by the USMC during the Cold War and in conflicts such as Operation Desert Storm (1991). Early paint schemes included camouflage in Dark Green and Gunship Grey on the upper surfaces, with the undersides painted in Light Gull Grey. Starting from the 1980s, with modernization and introduction of the AV-8B Harrier II, new colors appeared—Extra Dark Green and Dark Blue-Grey, used in both two-tone and wrap-around variants. During ODS, it was found that the standard USMC camouflage was ineffective in the desert, which led to improvised repainting of aircraft using available field colors.
