A-7E Corsair II – brief historical overview
The A-7E Corsair II is a single-seat, subsonic attack aircraft nicknamed “SLUF” (Short Little Ugly Fellow) by its pilots. It entered service with the US Navy in the late 1960s, replacing the A-4 Skyhawk. The E version, being the most advanced, featured sophisticated avionics and the Allison TF41 turbofan engine. The Corsair II took active part in operations over Vietnam, as well as during conflicts in Libya and in Operation Desert Storm in 1991.
The A-7E was mainly in service during the Cold War, from the late 1960s to the early 1990s. It was recognized for its very high precision in striking targets and significant operational effectiveness during ground-attack missions.
