Historical background: The P-51 Mustang was designed at the request of Great Britain in 1940 and soon gained the status of one of the best fighters of World War II. The P-51D version stood out with its characteristic "bubble" canopy, which improved pilot visibility, as well as stronger armament. Mustangs were used in all theaters of war – they effectively escorted American B-17 and B-29 bombers and performed ground attack missions in Europe, Africa, and the Pacific. The Mark IV variant (British designation and used, among others, by the South African Air Force) brought a new standard to aerial combat and ground support. It served actively from 1941-1945, and later was used by reserve units until the late 1950s.
