History of the G6 Rhino

The G6 Rhino self-propelled howitzer was developed by the South African defense industry in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Its primary user is the South African National Defence Force (SANDF). The vehicle made its debut during the Cold War period, with the first units entering service in 1988.

The G6 Rhino gained fame for its excellent mobility in the challenging terrain of the South African bush and the powerful firepower of its 155mm howitzer. It took part in armed conflicts in southern Africa, including the Border War in Namibia. Thanks to its solid armor, long firing range, and speed, it is considered one of the most effective self-propelled artillery systems of its time and remains in widespread use by the SANDF to this day.

Model Advantages and Recommendations

  • Exceptional attention to detail in the hull, turret, and chassis
  • Parts enabling realistic presentation of the vehicle in various combat positions
  • Possibility to create a diorama with the vehicle in a typical South African environment
  • An excellent choice for both modern military collectors and artillery enthusiasts

Recommended difficulty level: 4/5. This model is recommended for intermediate and advanced modelers—an excellent addition to any collection of modern armored vehicles.

What does the scale of the model mean?

A model scale designation such as 1:30 means the model is 30 times smaller than the original. Scale indicates proportion, not resolution or detail.

  • Models with a smaller number after the colon (e.g. 1:48, 1:32) are larger and have more detail.
  • Scales with higher numbers (e.g. 1:164, 1:200, 1:350) are smaller - good for collections, dioramas, or displaying many models together.
