The original 20 cm/50 barrels were widely used on the main heavy cruisers of the Japanese fleet, including ships of the Mogami, Takao, Atago, Myoko classes and other modern Imperial Japanese Navy designs of the 1940s. This weapon formed the main striking force of these vessels during Pacific battles—from the Java Sea campaign to the battles around the Solomon Islands. From 1940 onward, upgrades and replacements with newer, more efficient barrels enhanced the firepower of the Japanese fleet, significantly affecting the course of numerous naval engagements during World War II.
