The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress is a true icon of American military power during World War II. It was the first fully metal, four-engine heavy bomber for the USA, playing a key role in daytime precision strategic bombing raids on industrial and civilian targets in the Third Reich. B-17 aircraft took part in campaigns in both Europe and the Pacific, attacking Japanese airfields and naval convoys. The G variant, in particular, was equipped with as many as 13 .50 caliber machine guns, making it one of the best-defended bombers of its era.

The success of the B-17 is reflected in numbers: of the 1.5 million tons of bombs dropped on Germany by September 1944, as much as 500,000 tons came from the Flying Fortress. In combat, around 20,000 German aircraft were destroyed, and out of the 12,000 B-17s produced, as many as 250,000 Americans had their wartime experience in them.
