Historical description of the Sd.Kfz.164 Hornisse

The self-propelled anti-tank gun Sd.Kfz.164 Hornisse (German for “Hornet”) was introduced into service in 1943, at the height of World War II. It was based on the chassis of the Pz.Kpfw.IV combined with suspension components from the Pz.Kpfw.III, and was armed with the exceptionally powerful 88 mm PaK 43/1 L/71 gun, regarded as one of the most effective anti-tank guns of that era. The Hornisse was distinguished by its high firepower, enabling it to effectively combat heavily armored Allied vehicles, including Soviet T-34s and American Shermans. This vehicle was especially used during the Battle of Kursk and in subsequent defensive actions by the Wehrmacht. In total, about 494 Hornisse vehicles were produced before the name was changed to Nashorn in May 1944. Since this model represents the Hornisse version, it corresponds to the first production period (1943 – 1944).
